Gold Standard: A Performance & Installation by Liz Miller

Experience a fully immersive exhibition and installation poolside. Artist Liz Miller will present viewer-interactive performance, video, and photography. Developed over the past five years, the body of work explores the relationship between the desire for wealth, the perfected mediated image of women, and how that influences global culture. We live in an age of simultaneous excess and diminishing returns – overproduction of fiat currency leading to devaluation. Likewise, technological advances increase the attainability of idealized physical bodies. How does the intersection of economy and desire affect our psyche? Miller contrasts forged currency with a parody of homogenized female form in Gold Standard.

Honolulu-based artist Liz Miller appropriates and recontextualizes images from popular culture in her work. Media imagery became a focal point of her work while earning a Master’s degree at the San Francisco Art Institute. References to the media have since become a thematic consistency in her studio practice. Her artistic output is diverse both formally and in content: she is a multimedia artist who employs diverse aesthetics. Her studio practice encompasses photography, installation, sculpture and video. The subject matter of each piece dictates her stylistic choices. Liz also completed a Visual Arts PhD at Sydney College of the Arts in 2014, where she received both the IPRS and IPA international scholarships. Her thesis works were shot on the Kalapana lava fields on the Big Island. Miller’s work explores how the relationship between commodity and image influence global society. Additionally she examines the hypocrisy within her critique of the media and her own participation in the indulgent superficiality of commercial culture.
